FAQs

  • Can you use the MidNite Solar CLASSIC 150-SL Charge Controllers with lithium batteries?
Yes, you can use any of the MidNite Solar CLASSIC or CLASSIC SL charge controllers with lithium batteries as long as you have a Battery Management System (BMS).
  • What is the max wire size the ground terminal will accept?
The max wire size the ground terminal will accept is 1/0, however, for systems with a battery breaker sized 60 amps and smaller, 10 AWG (6 mm2) copper is generally sufficient. For systems with a battery breaker sized 100 amps and smaller, 8 AWG (10 mm2) copper is required. For grounding conductor requirements on your specific installation please consult your local electrical code.
  • What is the max wire size the Battery and PV terminals will accept?
The max wire size the Battery and PV terminals will accept is 6 AWG.
  • Can I pair different MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controllers (e.g. 150 and a 250) in a MASTER / SLAVE setup, or do they have to be the same voltage?
Yes, you can pair different voltage CLASSIC Charge Controllers in a MASTER/SLAVE setup.
  • Can I pair the MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controller with the new MidNite Solar DIY inverters?
No, you cannot pair the CLASSIC Charge Controller with the new DIY inverters.
  • What happens when the voltage goes above the maximum voltage input on those cold mornings?
On those days, the CLASSIC's HyperVOC would kick in and shut the charge controller down. Refer to the HyperVOC chart for the Non-Operational Range.
  • While the MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controller is charging the batteries, can I simultaneously charge my battery bank with a battery charger?
Yes, you can simultaneously charge your battery bank while the MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controller is charging. This is similar to having a generator work in tandem with the CLASSIC and just as with a generator, the CLASSIC will regulate and make the necessary adjustments when simultaneously using a battery charger.
  • Can I use the MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controller with a diversion load?
Yes, the MidNite Solar CLASSIC has an AUX terminal which can be used to control a diversion load using MODBUS comms protocol. The two cannot talk to each other though.
  • When connected to a network via switch or router, will the CLASSIC turn on via Power-over-Ethernet (PoE)?
No, the MidNite Solar CLASSIC will not turn on with PoE. It will need to be connected to a battery bank to turn on.
  • Why isn't the new MidNite Solar CLASSIC properly pairing or communicating with my older MidNite Solar CLASSIC?
Check the status on the CLASSIC display. Hit the Status button and make sure the MNGP is the same version. If they are not the same version, you will need to update your charge controller(s).
  • Can I setup the charge rate for the battery bank?
Using the MidNite Solar MNWBJR and one of the MNSHUNTs, you can limit or control the battery current.
  • Up to how many CLASSICs can I have in parallel?

Exceptional Solar Controller

I recently replaced a 10 year old Apollo Solar Controller with a Midnite Solar Classic 150 Controller. After extensive research, and comparison shopping I found this unit. Although it wasn't the least expensive on the market, it did have the best warranty, the most extensive features, was made in the U.S. and as I eventually found out, during and after install, awesome customer service. Thanks Todd! (several times) The exterior is a retro 20's design? and is well built and sturdy. Replacing the old unit was, lets say, semi easy as the only criticism I have (if you can call it that) is that compared to the Apollo, the barrrel connectors for the PV array and battery bank are a bit on the small side and making the bend within the housing, then inserting them into the connectors took the bulk of the time to perform. Connecting the remaining wiring such as the ethernet cable, display cable, grounding cable and battery temperature sensor cable were simple. Simply replacing the front cover back on the unit and I was in business. Now, I highly recommend contacting your battery manufacturer and obtaining all the charging details from them "before" contacting Midnite Solar to help you establish your settings. As I said, Todd was awesome! He took me though all of the settings on the unit and in the process asked a lot of questions about my existing solar system configuration. Besides a multitude of configuration options, the Classic has the ability to communicate via ethernet with an app called the "Classic" app from the play store, (neither endorsed or supported by Midnite Solar) which connects to a router so you can access the Classic to actually see all the operating parameters in real time. This is on your local network. However, if you are adept at networking, supposedly you can port out the ip address and access it from the external world. For me, my living room is fine. Midnite Solar does provide a webpage option for reading the data on the Classic as well. Simply go to the Midnite Solar web page and sign-up for an account. They will email you a password so you can log into your account on the Mymidnite2 webpage. However, unlike the app, this version doesn't seem to auto update your systems performance automatically, I could only get it to update if I logged out then back in and then the info would be updated. Also, the time, regardless of how many times I updated the time configuration, always seemed to be one hour behind. Not a major issue but needs correction. So, with this web configuration don't expect to see autoupdating info. Lacking this ability does seem to diminish its potential "cool factor" somewhat. It would be nice to see that performance data changing in real time. Logging in and out is a frustrating way to get a performance update. (maybe I'm just missing something here) Also, I have used the Midnite Solar web page on my phone and tablet on a 5g network and it does load with that moments "snapshot in time" display just like on the PC. All in all, I am completely satisfied with the unit and now that I have been monitoring its performance, I have to say the price point is spot on compared to other solar controllers. I like how easy it is to navigate its options and compared to both the Apollo and even my Outback which operates in parallel with my new Midnite is light years beyond both of them. I have to say, the designers of the Midnite controller literally thought of everything and I mean everything. Thanks Midnite Solar! Note, the photo order is as follows from left to right: My new Midnite controller, readout from its data screen, My Midnite webpage, App from the Playstore.

MidNite Solar CLASSIC 150 MPPT Charge Controller

Great Charge Controller, very robust. Only minus is lack of software and integration with BMS and Inverters. I own 4 chargers, 20 Kwp, 24 kw inverters, 88kwh in lithium - 48 volts. Complete DIY. Also design additional active/passive cooling.

Awesome company!!

Our experience with Stellavolta’s Customer Service is stellar! Frank, with Stellavolta, took his time to speak with me and my husband to completely understand our existing solar system set-up and our needs. He also took his time to have a conference call with Michelle from MidNite to discuss the best solar panel configuration and MidNite Charge Controller to best meet our needs. By the way, Michelle is fabulously energetic and full of true interest in helping customers and in representing her company. After all that, Frank was so kind to email us the links to the solar products we discussed for our system just to make it easier on us when placing our order. We are so grateful for Frank & Michelle taking their time to educate us and help us understand how our solar system will work at its optimal. Stellavolta’s Customer Service is unlike any other we have experienced. Truly Frank went above and beyond to help us. We are so thankful we came across Stellvolta’s website and couldn’t be happier with the guidance, support, and outstanding Customer Service we received. Thank you so much Stellavolta!

This Controller Does It All

Bought this controller on a friend's advice; he has the Classic 200. He also installed this for me along with panels, etc. The Classic 150 is miles above the other controllers I had and has been running for a week now. I recommend this unit to all who need multi-panel arrays. I will have 25-100W Renogy panels; at 20 now. Final stringhs will be 5-100W panels on 5 strings, which is the max the unit can handle. Thank you Stellavolta and Midnite Solar for everything and reccomend the 150 to all solar uisers.
