Can I use the Morningstar SunSaver Solar Controller without connecting anything to the load terminals?

Yes, the use of the SunSaver load circuit is 100% optional. The controller will still function to regulate the solar charging of the batteries.

The 3-step connection procedure outlined in the operating manual only applies to systems that utilize the load circuit, however, you will still need to connect the battery first and then the solar panels. That's also the order in which the circuits should be energized. In other words, always turn the battery on first and the solar. Shutdown is just the opposite - solar off first and then the battery.

You may connect loads directly to the battery without having an adverse affect on the SunSaver. In this scenario, because the load circuit is not being used, the load circuit current rating is not applicable. In direct connections like this, the battery capacity is the only factor that limits the load current draw.
