FAQs

  • Can you use the MidNite Solar CLASSIC 150-SL Charge Controllers with lithium batteries?
Yes, you can use any of the MidNite Solar CLASSIC or CLASSIC SL charge controllers with lithium batteries as long as you have a Battery Management System (BMS).
  • What is the max wire size the ground terminal will accept?
The max wire size the ground terminal will accept is 1/0, however, for systems with a battery breaker sized 60 amps and smaller, 10 AWG (6 mm2) copper is generally sufficient. For systems with a battery breaker sized 100 amps and smaller, 8 AWG (10 mm2) copper is required. For grounding conductor requirements on your specific installation please consult your local electrical code.
  • What is the max wire size the Battery and PV terminals will accept?
The max wire size the Battery and PV terminals will accept is 6 AWG.
  • Can I pair different MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controllers (e.g. 150 and a 250) in a MASTER / SLAVE setup, or do they have to be the same voltage?
Yes, you can pair different voltage CLASSIC Charge Controllers in a MASTER/SLAVE setup.
  • Can I pair the MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controller with the new MidNite Solar DIY inverters?
No, you cannot pair the CLASSIC Charge Controller with the new DIY inverters.
  • What happens when the voltage goes above the maximum voltage input on those cold mornings?

  • While the MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controller is charging the batteries, can I simultaneously charge my battery bank with a battery charger?
Yes, you can simultaneously charge your battery bank while the MidNite Solar CLASSIC Charge Controller is charging. This is similar to having a generator work in tandem with the CLASSIC and just as with a generator, the CLASSIC will regulate and make the necessary adjustments when simultaneously using a battery charger.
  • Can I setup the charge rate for the battery bank?
Using the MidNite Solar MNWBJR and one of the MNSHUNTs, you can limit or control the battery current.
  • Up to how many CLASSICs can I have in parallel?
The manufacturer's recommended maximum number of CLASSICs in parallel is 50 units.

The Cray computer of Solar Controllers

This is our second Classic purchase, having bought the 200V last year. It performance is outstanding and can handle 20 100W panels. The 150V SL can handle a max of 25 100W panels, 5 strings of 5 panels in series and combined in parallel. It easily charges 4 6v 225Ah batts wired for 24V and 4 arrays. We plan to have a total of 6 24V arrays. The 200V is being moved to my woodshop soon. We have learned many lessons over the 14 years of using solar. One is buy American made like Midnite Solar; fantastic warranty, customer service and their tech support is the finest. Buy one for your system, you will be most satisfied. We do recommend the Classic and have assisted one friend in installing his new solar system. The Classic 150V, 24- 225Ah 6V batteries wired in 6 arrays of 24V along with 25 panels,. 5 strings of 5 100W panels in series combined in parallel. Thank you Stellavolta and Frank in tech support for his top notch advice and support.
