FAQs

  • Is it possible to program or setup the Sol-Ark 15K remotely?
Yes, this feature comes standard with the Sol-Ark 15K.
  • Is the Sol-Ark 15K stackable?
Yes, the Sol-Ark 15K can be stacked with up to twelve Sol-Ark 15K's in parallel in a 120/240VAC or 120/208VAC system. All temperature and CT sensors would connect to the Master and the Master unit will control charging. When programming, you would place both the Master and Slave(s) in parallel mode. The Master is always assigned Modbus Serial Number 01, whereas the Slaves would be assigned "02", "03", "04", ...etc. All units in parallel must share one battery bank.
  • What components are recommended for Rapid Shutdown?
Tigo TS4-A-F, APSmart, or MidNite Solar.
  • How do I AC couple my Sol-Ark 15K inverter?
Refer to the Sol-Ark 15K Load Side AC Coupled Wire Diagram 120V/240V on page 46 of your installation manual. When AC coupling, you can either connect to the GEN terminal or the LOAD breaker. An advantage of connecting to the GEN terminal is that your Sol-Ark inverter can accurately monitor the AC coupled system. Using the Sol-Ark monitoring service, you will be able to monitor the AC coupled inverter production as well as the Sol-Ark’s production.

A disadvantage of connecting to the LOAD breaker is that although you will be able to monitor the AC coupled system, the data may not be accurate. This is because your critical loads panel (or “back-up panel”) will use power from the AC coupled inverter before power goes through the Sol-Ark.

An advantage of connecting to the LOAD breaker, is that the LOAD breaker is 63 amps versus the GEN terminal’s 50 amps. If you are at risk of overloading your 50A GEN terminal, you may need to consider connecting to the LOAD breaker instead.

Keep in mind, that if you have loads on the LOAD breaker, you can use the GEN terminal for AC coupling, a generator, or for a smart load, however, if you are AC coupling to the LOAD breaker, then you won't be able to use the GEN terminal for anything else.

Once your connections are made, refer to page 32 of the manual for AC Coupling Settings.
  • Does the Sol-Ark 15K have a built-in transfer switch?
Yes, the Sol-Ark 15K has a built-in transfer switch that will switch from grid to battery bank automatically.
  • Does the Sol-Ark 15K include a Remote Temperature Sensor (RTS)?
Yes, the Sol-Ark 15K includes a hardwired RTS that connects with two wire leads.
  • Will the remote temperature sensor work with lithium batteries?
Yes, it will work with lithium batteries, but it will not be necessary if the lithium battery has an onboard Battery Management System (BMS).
  • Will my lithium batteries' Battery Management System (BMS) be protected in the event of a solar EMP/Solar Flare event?
No, the lithium batteries' BMS will not be protected in the even of a EMP/Solar Flare event.
  • How can I protect my batteries in the event of an EMP/Solar Flare event?
You can build your own Faraday cage and there may be many ideas online how to do so.
  • I would like to use the MidNite Solar MNBCB Battery Combiner Box with my Sol-Ark inverter and battery bank. Should I use the one with the 50mV or 100mV shunt?
You can use either battery combiner box because unlike other inverters, the Sol-Ark inverters already have an intergrated shunt, so you may not be using the shunt that comes with the battery combiner box.
  • Why doesn't my Sol-Ark inverter have a serial number on it?
There is a QR code on the unit which is programmed with the serial number.
  • Can I use my back-up generator with the Sol-Ark?
Yes, as long as the generator voltage matches the Sol-Ark's voltage settings (e.g. 120/240 and 120/240 or 208 and 208).
  • I am connecting my batteries to the Sol-Ark and need to know what Amp-Hour Capacity to set. How do I determine that?
Take the per battery Amp-Hour Capacity (aka "Nominal Capacity") and multiply it by the number of batteries in your battery bank. That is your battery bank's Amp-Hour Capacity (aka "Nominal Capacity").
  • If I place my disconnect before the Sol-Ark inverter, how can I be certain the Sol-Ark inverter also shuts down?
You could add a 12V Emergency Button.
  • Is the Sol-Ark 15K inverter certified for grid-connect in Hawaii?
Yes, the Sol-Ark 15K inverter is certified for grid-connect in Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.

EMP/Solar Flare Protection

You guys asked for it and we delivered. Many of you have known that we build and test our products with our very own EMP generators.

"Generals always fight the last war" said General George Patton. That’s why new methods like chemical, tanks, blitzkrieg, and A-bombs had such devastating effects when first used. The world knows the U.S. military cannot be defeated in combat. So a new series of methods have already been developed that are much more dangerous than a dirty bomb or nuking a few cities. Future warfare will target entire nation’s Electrical Grid via Physical, Cyber, and EMP attacks. Even previously small threats like N. Korea or Iran could kill up to 300 million in a single first strike.

Geomagnetic Storms (similar to EMP)

Solar Flares are similar to EMP in their’ destruction but occur naturally. There have been several devastating solar flares in 1859 & 1921 but it was before the electronic age. They are not predictable and we have a chance of ~1% per year. Add that up over 10 years and we have ~12% chance of massive of long term power loss / loss of life. U.S.S.R. tests showed even power cables buried underground would be burned up.

Solar Flare Examples: (similar to EMP)

  • NASA July 2014 report states there is approximately 12% chance of Solar Flare over the next 10 years
  • Hydro-Quebec Storm of 1989 was only a 1x event and affected 7Million people
  • Railroad Storm in 1921 was 10x bigger (10x event) than the Quebec above and affected all of North America!
    • If it occurred today, blackout would last 4-10 years
  • Carrington Event in 1859 was 100x bigger (100x event) than above Quebec event and it was felt Worldwide
    • Penetrated miles into Atlantic ocean to melt telegraph cables
    • Another (100x event) narrowly missed Earth July 2012

EMP Attack

ElectroMagnetic Pulse (EMP) delivered through a nuclear weapon has been researched by Russia and China. N.Korea gained access to many nuclear engineers after the U.S.S.R collapse. Iran and N.Korea worked closely together on ballistic missile technology. And unfortunately N.Korea demonstrated fission warhead capability in 2016. Ted Koppel reports a first strike would likely be both cyberattack combined with EMP. What may surprise you is 4 states passed legislation to begin protecting critical portions of their’ electrical grid against EMP and Geomagnetic Storms. The protections being discussed and implemented will not protect homes or businesses.

EMP Threats

  • N. Korea launched KMS-3 satellite with practice trajectory over Washington DC April 2013
  • N. Korea freighter caught smuggling 2 nuclear capable missiles on their launchers July 2013
  • N. Korea detonates H-bomb Jan 2016
  • N. Korea launched KMS-4 satellite showing capability of delivering nuclear EMP altitude Feb 7 2016
  • US States EMP protecting portions of Grid (not homes) Maine 2013, Virginia/Arizona 2014, Florida 2015
